SINKING OF THE ORION TANK VESSEL IN THE GULF OF MEXICO
In March 2006, the Orion tanker, from the company Navalmex Combustibles, sank off the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, with victims, shipwrecked and with the risk that the fuel onboard would spill causing an ecological impact.
The company, in coordination with the authorities, began the search for the victims, rescue of the castaways, care for the victims’ families, permanent environmental monitoring and other actions to mitigate the impact of this crisis.
Ventura Communications designed the crisis communication strategy through the formation and coordination of a crisis committee, made up of company managers, appointed spokespersons, environmental lawyers, and psychologists.
We develop different activities inherent to the critical situation that arose:
- Coordination of the communication actions of the crisis committee such as: defining the guiding axes of communication; establish roles and responsibilities; structure communication with different key audiences
- Permanent communication with local and federal authorities to carry out all the inquiries that contribute to clarify the causes of the sinking and, where appropriate, adopt or delimit responsibilities; coordinate the rescue efforts of the castaways, as well as environmental monitoring of the affected area
- Preparation of positions regarding the measures that were undertaken to mitigate the effects of the crisis, as well as immediate, medium and long-term corrective actions and measures to compensate the damages caused to third parties, and the normal restoration of the company operations
- Permanent communication with local and national journalists requesting information on the evolution of the crisis
Once the crisis was successfully resolved, Ventura Comunicaciones implemented a crisis recovery program, as well as Public Affairs for the re-establishment and strengthening of relations with key authorities.
Currently, Navalmex Combustibles is one of the main fuel distribution companies for private vessels that has consolidated a culture of prevention and has strengthened its protocols for dealing with emergencies and crises inherent in the nature of its operations.
